Tangled Hangers is typically great, so is Catalina.
Mona, however, is a snarling beast of electric rock n roll. Steve's artistry toward the end of this ... jam is so searing, so confident in it's fury, I can easily picture tongues of flame flying from his guitar. When I listen to this, I am always moved to stand up, clench my fists, raise both my arms and yell "Wooooooooooooooo!!" All the more amazing considering on other numbers in this show he lays back and doesn't do much. Dynamics, baby.

I once read an interview with Steve Kimock and he refered to Catalina. Paraphrasing, he discussed how he's played that song so many times and sometimes
...
he just plays it while other times he will "Go for it". This show is filled with great stuff (i.e Tangled Hangers;Rigor Mortis;Outskirts Of Town; Not Fade>Mona Jam!) but the very special stand out here is Catalina. This is one of those where he truly "goes for it". I have been listening to it on and off for 6 years now. I have always compared it to other Catalina solos. I have heard a couple that come close but have never heard one like this. His solo here, in my humble opinion, personifies Steve Kimock. His emotion, improvisation, patience, and brilliance. He is painting a picture here. While music is subjective- listening to this solo paints a picture of Catalina's beauty. Add this show to your collection, sit back, and listen to her beauty.
A couple side notes. Oddly, Friday's Child does not have a guitar closer. Rather, Martin takes it home with the sax. A nice change. Also, while you will not here crowd chatter during the music (except briefly in Tangled) there are some comments in between tunes that are actually quite entertaining. A dude upfront is appearantly at his first show and is obviously blown away. His reactions are delightfully candid, especially after Rigor Mortis and Catalina. Enjoy.
